Winters, Kolkata and Kebabs…well, all I can say is, it tastes even better than it sounds 🙂

It was a fine Saturday evening with that pleasant nip in the air, when I and my fellow Kebab hunters gathered at our first stop- Food Rocks Café. The otherwise nondescript place in a by-lane in the Beckbagan area offers no fancy ambiance, but is sure to floor you with its delectable kebabs. Amongst the three types of kebabs they served us, the Chicken Roast Kebab in gravy was the showstopper. With generous dollops of cream, the gravy kebab tasted divine with Rumali  Rotis straight out of the ‘tawa’. However, what got this place that extra brownie point is the soft, creamy Gajar Ka Halwa, with the purrrfect amount of sugar at the end. ‘It is complimentary for you’ they said with a smile… indeed the little pleasures in life comes without a price tag!

On that sweet note the squad moved onto its next stop, the very well-known ZeeShan. This place near Park Circus seven point crossing needs no introduction, as almost all of us are a fan of its Halim, Tikka and Brain Rolls. We kept it simple here and munched on the time tested Tikka Rolls, discussing food, school admissions and Kolkata, amongst other things!

The next stop was Kebab-e-Que, The Astor. A rich heritage laden fine dining experience was exactly what it offered. Dahi Kebab, Fish Tikka Kebab, Mutton Burra Kebab…all of them with that disinhibited smear of hung-curd wove nothing less than sheer magic.

The final destination was our very own Sharma Dhaba in Ballygunge Circular Road. The walk ended with Roti, Chicken Reshmi Kebab in gravy and the quitessential  Dhaba Di Chai.

Thank you Poorna Banerjee for arranging and conducting this walk. As I write this, I still feel full not only because of those utterly delicious Kebabs, but also because of the amazing company and the wholesome conversations we had that evening.

Devlina, in her own words, is “Just another Bengali woman proud of her Rabindrasangeet and Rosogolla roots ….. a Psychiatrist, still picking up the shells on the Freudian shore !”
