Pondicherry is a food lover’s paradise. The White Town or French Quarter, is strewn with eateries, and is as delicious as it is pretty and pastelly. Cafes, bakeries, ice-cream parlours, uber fancy dining options, plain Janes serving simple yet delicious food- you name it and Pondy has it!
Needless to say, it was an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ situation for me. However, food has to be taken seriously, and thus I had my research done and there I was with my “Eating out in Pondy” list!

A. Café
- Le Café:
Located on the beach road, Le Café is that perfect 24 hour beach café, where you can just sit back and enjoy your brew, while the sea breeze teases you.
Food is pretty average though, and so is the service.Impression: Scores high on the ambience and low on the food quality.
Perfect for that evening cuppa by the sea.
2. Café des Artés:
Peppy, quirky and yummy, CDA is bound to impress! The crepés and baguettes are a must try.
It also has a small in-house boutique.
Go there for your post evening-stroll cravings.
B.Bakeries
1. Baker’s Street:
A friend of mine recommended the place, and I just cannot thank her enough.
Famous for their quiche and croissants, they do a good job with their french styled desserts too.
This is one of those places in Pondy that just cannot be missed.
C. Ice cream parlours
1. GMT:
Quaint little parlour at the end of the Beach Road, serving sinful gelatos and ice cream cakes.
D. Fine Dining
1. Le Dupleix:
Erstwhile residence of the first French governor Joseph Francois Dupleix, this colonial styled villa exudes class and elegance. It treated us with the most perfect, dreamy, candle light dinner on our anniversary and thus it is so special to me.
It serves authentic French cuisine, and their sea food is a must have,as is a sip from their wine menu.
Service is impeccable- prices are on the expectedly but justifiably higher side.
- Bay of Buddha:
This rooftop restaurant of The Promenade Hotel serves scrumptious Asian delicacies. Located centrally on the beach, this is the place to be for a laid back dinner.
Gorgeous ambience, great food, good service – they just leave you happy and spoiled.
E. Good Food
1. Le Marre:
One of the three restaurants at Hotel Du Parc.
Expect good food at a decent price here. Serves continental and Indian Cuisine.
2. Spice Route:
Go there for the much recommended Jack Daniel Steak. Serves continental cuisine.

Pondicherry has two things that possibly no other place in India can boast of.
(a) A promenade that is an absolute dream to stroll about. Add to it the absolute ban on motorised vehicles between evenings and mornings.
(b) Probably the most concentrated distribution of absolutely wonderful and diverse eateries in India.

We were eating cheaply in Pondicherry but what a lovely town!we were there for Gharsha festival this spring!

Husband is professor of architecture and we were in India for four wonderful months Jan-May 2015. Part of the time we traveled from Ahmedabad where CEPT University is located. Went to Rajasthan for a week, 12 days to the north and 14 days to the south for temples, beaches, backwater boat rides. . . . loved Pondicherry. . . . Loved the French quarter in contrast to the Indian city. . . .I adore Incredible India and would go back in a New York Minute. Much of my blog is about India.

Well for me I guess it was a vacation but my husband was teaching and leading architect students. Either way, it was an incredible time for sure!
